Tasks to Tackle Before Moving into Your Cook County Home

1Moving into a home is both an exciting and challenging time in your life. Planning where you'll place your belongings, and how you'll decorate your house is fun. But, you also have to pack, clean and move everything. There are some tasks which you should tackle before settling into your new Cook County home, to make the process easier.

First things first, you’ll want to change the locks around the house. It’s also a great time to install any additional security features you'd like, such as a deadbolt or security camera. Head to your local home improvement store to DIY, or hire a locksmith to help you with the task.

During your property inspection, were there any critters or insects found? Whether you decide to hire a professional or do-it-yourself, you’ll want to get rid of any pests residing in your home prior to moving in. Doing so will be more effective in terms of results and easy clean-up. For maximum pest control, set up a seasonal extermination routine, either on your own or through a service.

2When was the last time the house was painted? If not recently, add a fresh layer of paint on the walls to customize your new home to your liking. If there are any stains on the walls painting can be a great way to cover them up. Be sure to check with your paint professionals, they’ll help you pick one which works well for the job. Some paint primers also help kill off mold and odors, creating a mildew-resistant surface on the walls; a great preventative measure to include.

Are you upgrading your floors, or do they need to be cleaned? This will be a big hassle to do after your furniture is moved in, it’s best to take the time to get it done before moving in. You’ll want to steam clean carpets at the very minimum to remove dirt and give them a fresher look. If you’ve chosen to add new flooring, be sure to call in the professionals as soon as possible to get the job done.

3Deep cleaning isn’t a favorite task for many of us, but it will freshen up your new home, and prepare the space for unpacking. Clean out all cabinets, countertops, sinks, bathtubs and showers, as well as appliances. You’ll want to scrub walls and doors as well as all windows. Don’t forget to replace air filters, and have heating/cooling systems serviced as well. Moving into a freshly clean space will help ease the stress of unpacking, as the hard part will already be done.
